Netscape CEO Jim Barksdale has said that Netscape is considering giving away its Web browser for free, in order to win market share and drive the sale of other products. Netscape has been losing market share to Microsoft, whose Internet Explorer browser is free. Browser revenue now only accounts for about 18 percent of Netscape?s turnover. When Netscape Navigator was first launched in 1994, the product was free for individual and non-commercial use.
