Scottish Telecom is planning to transfer all its premium rate, content driven audio services to a 'free' Internet service.
The company, which owns Demon Internet, runs a number of audio services. One of the most popular is Clubcall, which offers football fans up to the minute results, latest news, gossip and exclusive interviews over the telephone.
Instead of dialling a premium rate number, users will be able to access real time video, audio and text information, for free over the Web.
Also set to go online are Racecall, a similar service for horse racing fans; Weathercall for up to the minute weather information; and the company's consumer competition business.
According to Martin Higginson, director of Scottish Telecom responsible for Interactive Services, Clubcall is immensely popular, currently getting between six million and seven million calls a year, while Weathercall gets around nine million calls.
"The premium rate arm of Scottish Telecom is a £40 million business grown out of delivering content. We understand how to make people pick up the phone to listen to premium rate audio information. It make sense to 'webify' this and give the customer what they want," he said.
By putting Clubcall online the company hopes to make money by attracting more people to its phone service as well as charging for some additional services.
"There will be some pay as you go services. For example you might be able to download a screensaver of David Beckham scoring the winning goal at Manchester United," explained Higginson.
The company is also considering extending its telephone share service, Teleshare online to give Web users real time share information.
When the services go live customers will still be able to access them by phone but will also have the choice of accessing them over the Web. Clubcall will be the first to go live in early October with the others following shortly.
