Six months after its $743 million acquisition by IBM, systems management developer Tivoli has announced its product set that merges IBM?s Systemview management tools with its own.
Called TME 10 Global Enterprise Manager (GEM) it manages a distributed PC, Unix and mainframe environment. Said Scott Harmon, Tivoli?s vice president of worldwide marketing: ?GEM ties in IBM?s Systemview tools with Tivoli?s distributed management tools.?
Apart from including IBM and Tivoli?s existing tools GEM features an Applications Policy Manager. This enables users to manage an application as a unified entity instead of a series of individual components.
Explained Harmon: ?It allows users to look at and manage all their business applications and set management policies for them. They don?t have to manage at the detailed system level such as the hardware. Other tools such as Computer Associates? Unicenter manages at the hardware, systems and server level. This is not enough. Systems managers need to see their users? views of their applications. You can?t see the impact of a fault on an application if you just look at the hardware.?
Tony Launders, CA?s UK enterprise management software product manager, dismissed Harmon?s claims that Unicenter is too hardware-oriented. ?GEM sounds very much like Unicenter. We?ve allows users to look at the business process views for goodness knows how long. We enable people to slice and dice their environments and look at their systems from different angles.?
CA is developing TNG, a 3D graphical user interface that will unify and simplify users? views of their PC and mainframe environments. This is due out at the beginning of 1997.
