Compaq is planning to move to the high end of the networking market with the launch of a Gigabit Ethernet switch early next year.
Until now, Compaq has mainly targeted high volume segments of the market, such as network cards and entry level Ethernet switches. But, said product manager Graham Stewart from Compaq UK: ?It is our strategy to be among the first vendors to supply Gigabit Ethernet switches that fully comply with the standard?.
The Gigabit Ethernet standard is expected to be ratified in March, and Compaq is planning to ship its switch around that time. Graham Stewart said the switch will support Layer 3 switching, and that it will be ?aggressively priced, compared to other Gigabit products from tier 1 vendors?.
