Laptops are getting cheaper, and more are being sold, compared to desktop PCs according to a report from web-based researcher DisplaySearch.
While laptop displays are getting larger, their cost fell by about a fifth on average in the last three months, or to around $270. Only 12 months ago, the same screens cost an average of $463.
DisplaySearch said these falling component prices will mean laptop sales grow far quicker, sold as a percentage of all computers, than before.
The report said: "Laptop PC penetration will rise from 18.3% of PC shipments in 2000 to 19.9% of PC shipments this year. In 2001, the total PC market is expected to rise just 5.6% due to the global slowdown in corporate and consumer spending, with laptop PCs growing over four times faster than desktops at 14.4% vs. 3.6%.
"Due to rapidly falling laptop PC prices, the reduced performance gap of laptops vs desktops, and advantages of portability, DisplaySearch projects that notebook penetration will continue to increase to almost 25% by 2005."
In terms of branded laptop PC shipments in the three months to the end of March, the report revealed that Sony lead the market where the laptop display was less than 12.1in, Compaq led at 12.1in and 13.3in, and Dell led at both 14.1in and 15.0in.
IBM was the only company in the top five in each of the five panel-size categories, while Compaq and Toshiba were in four categories.
Compaq, IBM and Toshiba appear to be targeting all categories, and Dell is strongly focused on larger-sized laptops.
