3Com will launch a number of consumer devices this year including a handheld Net device and an Internet phone on the back of the phenomenal success of its Palm Pilots.
Palm Pilot users will be able to slot their handheld devices into any 3Com Internet phone and turn it into their own personal telephone terminal, said Eric Benhamou, 3Com's chairman and chief executive.
He said: "The phone will use the session initiation protocol which will have as much an impact on telephony as http has had on the Web."
The 3Com Internet phone is currently in lab trials and if the scheduled spring field tests are successful, the product could be on the market this year, confirmed Benhamou.
3Com is keeping quiet about its handheld Net device but it did reveal that it will use the same mobile technology as the Palm Pilot. However, sources claim it will give consumers a cheap, easy and portable ride onto the Internet.
