Boffins using virtual pedestrians have plotted crowd control movements for the Notting Hill Carnival.
Researchers at University College London created a virtual Notting Hill, with virtual crowds, to pick out potential 'crush points'.
According to the magazine Nature the model, which suggests the best route for people to take to reduce overcrowding, is L-shaped.
Although the model is at odds with the circular system the Carnival organisers wanted, they have agreed to a U-shape compromise.
Michael Batty and his colleagues used the computer model to test six alternative routes.
The team, brought in by the Greater London Authority, monitored entry points into the carnival area using information from transport officials and first aid groups.
By filling their virtual Notting Hill with thousands of computerised pedestrians, they were able to predict potential overcrowding and the knock-on effect of road and underground closures.
The team will be at the carnival this weekend collecting more information to improve their simulation.
