AOL has teamed up with Tivo to develop interactive television applications.
Initially the companies will develop a way for Tivo users to access AOL TV, which will add AOL services to TV viewing.
As part of the deal, AOL will take a minority stake in Tivo. Financial details of the agreement have not been released.
Earlier this year AOL announced plans to work with DirecTV. Philips Electronics and Network Systems on the AOL TV project.
Tivo’s service enables consumers to download television signals on to a 'smart VCR'. From this they can select and watch programmes in their own time. Future Tivo VCR’s will be able to receive the AOL TV service. This will enable consumers to interact with TV programmes and chat using AOL’s Instant Messenger system.
Tivo is not short of heavyweight backers. The current list includes CBS, Walt Disney and Cox Communications.
