Sources claim Bay Networks will pay up to $200 million to buy gigabit Ethernet start-up Rapid City Communications.
Bay representatives said share price regulations preclude them from commenting on any proposed deal but one told VNU Newswire: "I would agree that anything could happen around here." Bay is understood to be negotiating with Rapid City this week.
Cisco Systems bought Granite Systems, a rival of Rapid City, last September for $220 million. A takeover of Rapid City would fill a hole in Bay?s product line and the company recently admitted it has an ambitious timetable for product development.
