Sun Microsystems has created a new unit to focus on working with Java and Jini technology licensees and has consolidated development into a single engineering group to try and integrate the two offerings seamlessly.
As part of the reorganisation, Sun has also redeployed Jon Kanneguaard and Jim Mitchell, two of its vice presidents. Kanneguaard was formerly in charge of Sun's Java Software division but will now liaise between the Labs and Sun's product groups, while Mitchell looked after its Java standardisation efforts and will head Sun Labs.
George Paolini, formerly vice president of marketing for Sun's software products and platforms, was also named vice president of the firm's Java Community Development.
Paolini and his team will work with partner companies to adapt Java, Jini and other technologies to their needs. Mike Clary, vice president of business development, sales and services, will now be responsible for the strategic marketing and business development for all Sun software products.
Rob Enderle, an analyst at Giga Information Group, said: "It makes a certain amount of sense. Jini uses a chunk of the Java code base and it will have to do a lot of the same things. I don't know why Sun kept them separate."
Patricia Sueltz, the newly appointed president of Sun's software products and platforms group, claimed that Sun was integrating Java and Jini to try and create a seamless, end to end solution.
"We're serious about being more inclusive and cooperative with the community of developers that are committed to the further evolution of Java and Jini as cross platform and compatible technologies for the development and deployment of Internet applications and services," she attested.
Jini, which was launched in February 1998, is intended to connect disparate devices to a computer network as easily as plugging in a telephone. Java, which was unveiled in 1995, is a programming language and set of related software libraries. It can be used to build applications that run on a variety of incompatible computer systems without major modification.
