Printing heavyweight Tektronix announced a new addition to its family of workgroup colour printers today, claiming it is cheaper than rivals and five times faster than its predecessor.
Tektronix, Europe?s market leader in colour printing, revealed the vital statistics for the Phaser 360 - five pages per minute (ppm) in colour, 14ppm in monochrome and 800 dots per inch. It will retail for 3,295. It comes with a free lifetime supply of black ink for mono printing.
Tektronix said the model is the fastest of its kind on the market and up to five times faster than its 350 predecessor, claiming this underlines its commitment to the colour printer market.
Soren Krarup, Tektronix' European marketing manager, said: ?We won?t be competing with Canon in the sub-#2,500 market or Xerox in the high volume printing market. With the colour printing sector expanding so quickly in Europe we will prove it can be cheaper to print in colour rather than black and white.?
He pointed to research, undertaken for Tektronix by analysts IDC, which predicts a steady decline in demand for mono printers against an increase for colour models.
He added that printing will become increasingly personalised and software-based, as so many companies now possess powerful client/server systems.
The printer will ship from 19 January.
