Cisco to develop cable modems
by Linda Leung
Cisco is working with Spanish communications devices specialist Teldat to develop cable modems without television capabilities.
The modems will be aimed at carriers that want to offer Internet access plus IP telephony and data services to small and home office users. Cisco will be providing Teldat with IP technologies to embed in its cable modems.
The first product, Aura, will be available early next year, specifically for the southern European market. It will be based on standard data-over-cable networking, which conforms to the ITU J.112 or Docsis data-over-cable system specification.
Cisco already works with television set-top box specialist, Pace Micro, to integrate its IP technology into Pace's range of receivers and decoders for the consumer market.
Cisco expects to sign deals similar to Teldat's with suppliers in northern Europe.
