Cellnet and Vodafone are fighting to improve indoor coverage in public buildings by installing base stations in key public places.
Vodafone is to install a base station inside Terminal Four at Heathrow Airport, while Cellnet has set up stations in the City offices of NatWest and Nomura. Cellnet also said it would install transmitters in Heathrow and in the Millennium Dome in Greenwich.
Vodafone?s base station at Heathrow will enable users to make and receive phone calls inside the terminal building. It is also planning coverage inside railway stations, sporting arenas and the London Underground system.
Meanwhile Cellnet is to become the first UK cellular operator to offer a roaming service in China.
It is close to signing a deal with China Telecom to allow subscribers to its digital network to make and receive calls in most towns and cities in China.
Cellnet already offers similar facilties in Hong Kong.
