Google is closing the gap on arch rival Microsoft in the ongoing browser wars, with the latest figures from research firm Net Applications showing that its Chrome browser has reached the 10 per cent market share milestone.
Chrome had 5.61 per cent of the browser market in February 2010, but the figures for December show that one in 10 people are using the Google browser, more than Safari on six per cent and Opera on just over two per cent.
Opera, Internet Explorer and Firefox all saw their chunk of the market fall over the past 10 months, the Net Applications figures reveal.
Internet Explorer suffered the worst, losing some four and a half per cent of its users, while Firefox lost around 1.5 per cent and Opera saw its share fall from 2.25 per cent to 2.23 per cent over the period.
Internet Explorer has around two thirds of the market, followed by Firefox with 18.5 per cent.
Microsoft will be hoping that its upcoming IE9 software release will help it wrest some of the initiative from arch rival Google.
Microsoft announced in December that downloads of IE9 had already reached 15 million as the firm seeks to move customers off the outdated IE6.
IE9 is set to include new features including functionality designed to protect users from web sites which track their surfing behaviour.
V3.co.uk got its hands on a copy of the IE9 beta and was impressed with several of the new features, including hardware accelerated graphics and greater support for web standards such as HTML5 and CSS3.
