Two US men are planning to send AOL back more than a million promotional CDs which they say have ruined magazines and created an environmental nightmare.
John Lieberman and Jim McKenna started to collect the CDs after getting blitzed by several of them in one week.
The pair, both IT specialists, have vowed to collect a million of them and return them to the firm with the message: "How would you like it if somebody was doing this to you?"
Lieberman and McKenna fear that the huge number of CDs being given away are polluting the environment.
"Unlike pre-approved credit card offers made of paper, CDs are very difficult to recycle," Lieberman said.
Lieberman argued that he neither uses nor wants to use AOL services, but that he continues to receive promotions. He added that he has contacted AOL "through letters and e-mail" asking for the mailings to stop.
The pair have now registered a website, NoMoreAOLCDs.com and bought rolls of clothesline on which to string the incoming CDs.
The site claims to represent all who are sick of receiving unwanted AOL CDs. "Don't throw them away or get mad, send 'em to us and we'll all end this wasteful practice while sharing a laugh or two."
According to Direct magazine it only took a few weeks for Lieberman and McKenna to receive 12,896 CDs.
But AOL has countered that it is environmentally aware. The firm said it recycles "10s of millions" of CDs and packaging materials annually through a program in which marketing partners are asked to return unused promotional disks.
