Rational Software has taken a $8.9 million minority stake in ObjecTime, which sells development tools to the real-time embedded software market, but has also negotiated an option to buy the organisation over time.
The stake is being used to cement a joint development deal, which will see the two companies collaborate on writing a version of the Unified Modelling Language (UML) methodology for the embedded software sector.
This will enable customers using any tool that supports UML to swap metadata and data models during development.
John Lambert, Rational?s UK managing director, said: ?The genesis of this relationship was that ObjecTime was one of the companies involved in the UML work and as that progressed, it became clear that it made sense to work together in the real-time space. It is a continuation of the focus we already had and accelerates our ability to deploy technology in this area rather than develop it ourselves.?
He added that the UK subsidiary currently generated approximately 40 per cent of its revenues from the embedded market, particularly in the military and aerospace industries.
The two firms will also work together to integrate Rational Rose and ObjecTime Developer products and also plan to jointly develop new offerings and undertake joint marketing initiatives.
