Sun Microsystems is to offer its first LDAP-enabled Internet directory product to manage resources across an enterprise.
Sun Directory Services 1.0 supports the lightweight directory access protocol (LDAP), which enables different LDAP or X.500 backed applications to view resources across a TCP network.
Sun?s new product has a Java-based configuration tool, replication server, and a SNMP mail and directory management agent. It can be queried by using HTTP as well as LDAP.p> A spokesperson for Novell claimed it was good for both companies that Sun was launching an LDAP directory services product to increase implementation of the protocol, but that it was not a competitor to NDS as Novell?s product was significantly more powerful and used across a number of different platforms.
