Yahoo has overhauled its Yahoo Mail Beta product, boasting a consistent user experience across multiple platforms including smartphones and tablets, plus social network integration so that users can see Twitter and Facebook updates alongside their emails.
From today, users can opt-in to the new Yahoo Mail Beta, which has been re-architected from the ground up to be leaner and faster, the company said.
The new user interface is consistent across all desktop, mobile, and tablet devices supported, which includes PCs, Apple iOS devices such as the iPhone and iPad, plus Android smartphones, according to Yahoo.
Yahoo is also promoting the new version as a central destination for social experiences, hence users can view and share updates from Twitter and Facebook, plus enhanced IM with Yahoo Messenger and SMS capability allowing for seamless chatting and texting.
In addition, the new release lets users browse slideshows from Flickr or Picasa links and watch video content from Flickr and YouTube right from their inbox.
"Online communication tools are an important part of people's lives, whether they're connecting with their friends and family, sharing pictures and videos, or keeping up on news across social networks," said Yahoo chief product officer, Blake Irving.
Yahoo Mail Beta will not be immediately available for Yahoo Small Business users, the company said, but web-based mail is becoming an increasingly popular choice for businesses, as an alternative to deploying and managing their own email server.
For example, Google announced on Tuesday that Virgin America is the latest company to move to its platform, with all of the airline’s 1,700 employees in North America having their corporate email account migrated to Gmail over the next few weeks.
The move will cut Virgin America’s email management costs by about half, according to Google, as well as saving them over 18 terabytes of storage space.
