Netscape has bought NewHoo, a Web directory which is similar to Yahoo but uses unpaid volunteers to edit each section. The value of the deal was not announced, but NewHoo's five full-time employees are now part of the Netscape staff. NewHoo staff consulted with its team of 4,600 unpaid section editors before agreeing to the deal, and Netscape's involvement in the Open Source community was a decisive factor in them agreeing to the move. NewHoo will be merged into Netcenter, adding more members to the portal site.
