One tenth of BT's local call traffic is used to access the Internet, according to a survey by the Financial Times. An estimated growth rate in Internet use of 10% and15% every month accounts for the recent rise in inland call volume - up 7% from 1995. BT said one tenth of local calls carried by BT each day are connections to the Internet.
Another survey by Commerce-Net/Nielsen in the US and Canada has revealed that Internet use has doubled in the past 18 months and that women are beginning to catch up with men. Five years ago only 10% of people online were women, but the figure has grown by 32%, giving a near 50:50 split.
