Unidata is trying to reinvent itself in the corporate arena by pushing into the already overcrowded market for transaction-based development tools for the Web.
The relational database and tools company, which started life selling Pick-based solutions, has focused until now on encouraging VARs to develop applications aimed at small to medium-sized businesses. But it sees its new Web development toolset, Redback, as a means of breaking into the elusive corporate sector.
Redback gives Windows 95 and NT developers customisable predefined templates for building applications and includes a metadata dictionary to enable several programmers to collaborate on a project.
Ketan Karia, Unidata's UK marketing director, said it had recruited a direct salesforce of six from scratch to try to make a greater impact on large companies. The firm currently generates 21% of its European revenues directly, but wants to increase this to 40% over the next 18 months.
Karia said: "We need to change our image to enter this market, but new entrants are being allowed in as the market changes. We don't want to own the enterprise, but our products will be suitable for application-specific areas."
The first version of Redback, which supports the company's own Unidata and Universe databases, was released at the end of December. It costs #995 for a single-client development licence, #5,000 per server licence, which includes gateways between Web and application severs, and #2,000 to #4,000 for connections to additional application servers.
