The concept of virtual reality holidays probably started with science fiction novels like Huxley?s ?Brave New World?. This week we got one step closer with the announcement of The Virtual Travel Agency system.
One of the top 50 travel agencies in the US, Intele Travel has opened up the market for independent travel agents to operate from home over the Internet. The system will use Computer Associates' new object-oriented database Jasmine.
PC users will be able to ?spin? a virtual brochure rack, access and print colour brochures, or tour cruise ships and hotel rooms. The deals will be closed by fax machine. Scheduled for release in the US in mid-1997, if successful it will be released in the other 38 countries where Intele Travel operates.
Two of the big four supermarkets will use the system to control sales of restricted products
