Bob Muglia, Microsoft's vice president of server applications, was banging the drum for the Common Object Model (COM) last week, speaking at a seminar with Andersen Consulting and Continental Airlines.
Muglia reiterated that COM is central to Microsoft?s enterprise strategy. He said: ?The core tenets of Microsoft?s NT and Windows strategy are its investment in underlying enterprise technology components, which we?ve been building over five years. We?ve invested 1,000 person years in the middleware infrastructure and an additional 1,000 person years in the toolsets.?
Integration is the second tenet, says Muglia, and again, it is COM that acts as the component glue. It integrates transaction processing, messaging and Web servers - and Microsoft ships its next generation Web and transaction servers this autumn.
The distributed TP monitor, says Muglia, comes integrated with a scripting engine and Webserver, and it is COM-enabled integration that enables Web-based applications to be distributed across an enterprise base. Interoperability relies on transaction, queuing, Web and scripting services, all of which rely on COM?s support for most programming languages and network transports, according to Muglai.
A rapid application development environment enables two developers to create sophisticated enterprise applications in under a month, he says, citing Andersen Consulting?s experience of rapid development and legacy integration.
The analysts developed a new claims processing application using COM and Microsoft Transaction Server, MTS, for a midwestern US insurance group. Local database clients are attached to MTS through COM and DCOM, as is the middle tier with SQL server, and this connects to the mainframe and the DB2 legacy applications.
Similarly, Continental Airlines' reservations system is an enterprise reservation system based on MTS and COM. Phase 1 is due to complete in the first quarter of next year with two centres and 300 agents operating at 300 tps. Phases two and three are airport ticket counters and airport gate management, and eventually, Continental will have 10,000-15,000 workstations and between 100 and 200 NT/MTS/SQL Servers.
