A new study from HP has suggested that UK businesses are spending money on IT without seeing the equipment or having any clear IT policy.
The study of small and medium sized businesses found that more than a third of those questioned were happy to buy IT equipment sight unseen, and were spending an average £12,000 in this way.
More worryingly, nearly two thirds had no IT policy or strategic goals when purchasing IT systems.
"It's a fast-food approach to buying computer technology," said David Wright, vice president and general manager of HP's Personal Systems Group in EMEA.
"It's quick and simple to buy, but are you getting your nutrients? Buying equipment like this is fast, but are you getting the long-term benefits you could?"
The survey found that companies were often willing to exchange value for money for speed and cheap entry, but HP warned that such purchasers would end up losing money from cheap systems that are obsolescent and may not even be needed.
