Cisco bolstered its network management offering last week with the launch of an integrated management suite.
The Cisco Netsys Service Level Management Suite (Cisco NSM) is the first fruit of the company's $79 million (u49 million) acquisition, last October, of Netsys Technologies. The suite is aimed at IP and IPX networks.
Cisco's introduction of the suite gives the company a greater hold in the network management space, allowing the company to rival vendors such as Cabletron.
The suite enables network managers to set up policies on the security and performance of the network, ensuring it does not fall below a certain level of performance. If it does, a utility called QuickSolver will attempt to diagnose the problem and suggest ways around it.
Using the software, LAN managers can have end-to-end control of their networks, with the ability to define, assess and repair service policies across switched and routed networks. Administrators can also use the package to create network "report cards" assessing connectivity, security and performance policies, to reveal which are not being met.
The suite consists of four main modules: Connectivity Service Manager, monitoring network connectivity and availability; Performance Service Manager, which looks after performance levels; the LAN Service Manager, a switching analysis tool which also displays the network topology; and the WAN Service Manager, which provides analysis and troubleshooting features over the wide area.
Three of the modules will ship in June, with the WAN Service Manager to follow later in the year. The Connectivity Service and Performance Service Manager modules will cost $7,500 (#4,700) for 50 routers and the LAN Service Manager $5,000 (#3,125) per management workstation. Pricing for the WAN Service Manager has not been announced.
