Altavista has taken a 19.9 per cent stake in 1stup, the Internet Service Provider that is hosting the Web portal supplier's free Internet access service, which was launched two weeks ago.
The move was seen as the latest attempt by a rival to knock America Online (AOL) from its pole position in the US market. But Altavista also said it was considering offering the service in Europe (see Newswire, 13 August, 1999), and added that it had already attracted 225,000 users.
