Rumours that Compaq will make a bid for Gateway 2000 intensified today, and even Unisys is now in the frame as cash-rich Compaq looks for ways to expand its business.
Last week a Compaq reseller told 'VNU Newswire' that the company will grab Gateway 2000 and make it into its direct marketing arm. The next day, Compaq was on the acquisition trail, snapping up remote access firm Microcom. But today the rumours have spread and now Unisys is in sight, according to a major US OEM.
Compaq refused to comment on rumours, but at its Innovate event last week, a senior salesman confirmed the company had looked at Digital - as reported by Newswire - and considered Bay Networks.
