MCI is expected to reveal soon the new owner of its retail Internet business that it has to offload to gain EC approval of its planned merger with Worldcom. Cable & Wireless, which agreed to buy MCI's wholesale Internet unit, is the front runner. Analysts reckon the the retail business could be worth $2 billion. Cable & Wireless is acquiring the wholesale unit for $625 million.
Last week EC chiefs approved the $37 billion Worldcom and MCI merger on the condition that MCI sell its entire Internet concern.
