European Commission officials have come under fire from industry figures for their lack of input into the promotion of electronic commerce.
EC officials were criticised at a recent workshop, organised by the Commission's industry directorate general, the first among a series of high level policy conferences aimed at establishing better understanding of the industrial aspects of electronic commerce.
'Many aspects of electronic commerce are dealt with by the internal market directorate at the Commission. We have seen some of its proposals which will not promote the free growth of the electronic commerce market,' said Otto Bjorklund, director of EC affairs at Nokia.
'We need input from those who deal with the regulatory part, and not just the industry side,' he said.
IT and telecoms commissioner Martin Bangemann said the workshops had been organised to look at the effectiveness of competitiveness of European industry and would not deal with regulatory or non-regulatory issues.
'But there are legal uncertainties we need to address. No one will participate in electronic commerce if they don't know, for example, if their private data is being protected,' said Bangemann.
He recommended that a dialogue on regulatory issues should be pursued with the relevant directorate-generals in the commission.
'We must help industry find the best way to get a global standard, and find out what the best practices are. Electronic commerce is an issue for all industrial sectors,' he said.
