Lucent Technologies has signed an agreement with WorldPort Communications to build and maintain a worldwide IP network. It will begin as a link between US cities and the Netherlands but will then grow into a global network. Initially, it will offer fax and voice-over IP for ISPs and will start tests in October. Meanwhile, Lucent is continuing its meteoric growth, reporting a Q3 net income of $435 million (#272 million), more than double its net income for the same quarter last year.
