Oracle is to go head-to-head with both IBM and Microsoft over collaboration software.
Oracle's new Collaboration Suite provides an integrated calendar, voicemail, workflow and file system support, based around Oracle's own database and application server software. The products are available immediately.
How firms will buy the software will depend on which Oracle products they already own, said Chris Ward, Oracle's product marketing manager. "But we intend to be aggressive in our pricing from the start," he added.
The announcement of Oracle's intentions comes as the deadline for Microsoft's licensing changes looms ever closer.
Microsoft users have been fearful that changes introduced will see them having to pay an annual fee for licence upgrades, which will see their costs rocket.
This may well have played a part in the timing of Oracle's announcement, said James Governor, analyst at Illuminata. "Users are now far more open to non-Microsoft alternatives," he said.
One of the problems faced by Oracle is that most enterprises are already committed to either Microsoft's Exchange email server or Lotus's Notes Domino server.
"There is an emerging market within mid-range companies which will be investing heavily in this technology and we expect to see some early wins there," said Ward.
"But as larger enterprises begin to realise the cost savings possible by being able to consolidate communications in a robust, scalable environment, we expect to see a growing interest. We expect to have won 10 per cent of the market in five years," he added.
Oracle will also offer the collaboration suite as a hosted service.
