The company has announced Infocenter 4.0, its client/server knowledge management software and the first fruit from its purchase of Lanacom?s search agent tools last July.
No one can deny the value of timely relevant information, but companies are finding their executives are snowed under and spend more time gathering information than using it. Infocenter promises to bring this under control.
Essentially, Infocenter obviates the need for surfing - whether on the Internet or Intranet - for the majority of knowledge workers in a corporate. It enables the company to assimilate streams of information from a variety of internal or external sources and present them in one convenient place.
?If information isn?t targeted, it?s superfluous,? said Nikki Nasch, Backweb business development director.
Using Infocenter?s Channel Profiling Tool, a visual applet for non-programmers, channels can be defined from sites, news groups and information feeds. Users can then subscribe to the channels and apply filters, alerts and searches to ensure they receive only relevant information.
Backweb has addressed some of the problems that drew criticism of earlier push software: that it clogged up client?s hard disks and hogged network bandwidth. So Infocenter comes with bandwidth conservation features, such as byte-level differential downloads, data compression and a variety of ?Polite Communication? technologies. It also uses ?Polite Agent? to transfer information to the client during times of low network and client activity.
