Netscape is spearheading a consortium of around 40 hardware and software companies which is seeking to establish a new audio and video data standard.
The standard, Real Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP), is a communications protocol for control and delivery of real-time media.Its backers compare development of the standard with efforts in the broadcast media to establish the FM radio standard. The group also includes Apple, Sun, IBM, Digital, Hewlett-Packard and Cisco. Microsoft is notably absent from the group's list of supporters.
