AS/400 software specialist, JD Edwards, bowed to the inevitable last week and announced integration between its OneWorld enterprise resource planning (ERP) package and Microsoft Backoffice.
Senior vice president, Michael Schmitt, speaking at the JD Edwards Focus 98 User Conference, said: "Windows NT is already the fastest growing segment of our business and our developers have been working closely with Microsoft engineers to ensure that SQL Server version 7.0 will be the price-performance leader for OneWorld on Windows NT."
Also speaking at Focus 98, Microsoft vice president for enterprise business releationships, Robert McDowell, said the two companies? collaboration, "improves application interoperability, lowers total cost of ownership, and improves overall system performance and reliability."
OneWorld will support Microsoft's Component Object Model (COM) for integration between OneWorld and third-party applications. This means users can access OneWorld data through COM interfaces.
Jim Foos, JD Edwards' senior vice president of development technologies, commented: "Increasingly complex business processes spanning multiple applications have made integration a high priority for our customers [and] COM provides a widely accepted component object model."
JD Edwards will ship COM support in OneWorld Release B73.3 at the end of this year. Future releases of OneWorld will support NT Server 4.0 Terminal Server Edition, better known by its Hydra code-name. The ERP vendor will support Hydra in OneWorld Release B73.2.2, due this autumn; OneWorld support for Microsoft Cluster Server will follow in the last quarter; and SQL Server 7.0 support will also ship this year.
