Anglo-French IT major, Sema Group, has set up its first Indian operation with a joint venture company, Sema Group Software India Private (SGSIP) in Salt Lake, Calcutta.
The venture - in which Sema controls 85 per cent and the West Bengal Electronics Industry Development Corporation the rest - will bid initially for a major project, financed by the World Bank, to set up a control and communications systems for power companies in the region.
The new company has recruited 20 software personnel and will increase its workforce to 50 by the end of the current year. Its main focus will be telecomms and systems integration.
In telecomms, the company will focus on providing customer care and billing systems and intelligent network systems to mobile phone operators.
At a later stage, projects in the areas of ERP, customisation and software development will also be considered.
"We are targeting earnings of up to #700,000 in the first year of operations," said Pierre-Yves Simonot, corporate marketing director at the Sema Group. The group is projecting an annual growth of at least 100 per cent during the first few years of operations. In India, it has already sold its CABS 2000 billing system to mobile operators Birla AT&T, Escotel Mobile, Bharti Cellular, Hutchinson MAX and JT Mobile.
Meanwhile the Sema Group is bidding for the $40 million computer control contract with power generator Powergrid. This will be in line with the World Bank's recommendations for augmenting power system operations across the eastern region of India. The deadline for submission of bids is 2 June.
