Cirrus Logic has hived off its graphics software business to ISD.
Financial terms were undisclosed. ISD is to retain all the staff in the unit which will be kept as a standalone division. It will also handle all customer relationships and support agreements for Cirrus graphics software.
The group will also continue to develop and support software drivers and firmware.
The deal has received the blessing of Jon Peddie, author of the graphics card bible 'The Peddie Report'. "Cirrus Logic has historically provided some of the best software support in the graphics industry," he said. "It's a real coup for ISD to hire this team."
Cirrus is now focusing its efforts on linear chip techonology, where it is a market leader.
Cirrus Logic was a pioneer in the graphics chip business. But in recent years the market has looked increasingly crowded, with more than 50 companies fighting for a piece of the action. The emergence of Intel as a major player in this market with the i740 chip has squeezed competition still further.
