Mystery surrounds the sudden resignation of Oracle's database supremo Jerry Held who has left the company to "pursue other interests".
Held was one of the most senior Oracle product managers. This year he spearheaded the launch of the long awaited Oracle8 database, cultivating a considerable profile through repeated public sparring matches with Michael Stonebraker, chief technology officer at arch rival Informix and Held's one time colleague at Ingres.
As a consequence of Held's departure, Mark Jarvis, senior vice president of server marketing, will assume additional respnsibilities, but Gary Bloom, senior vice president in charge of Oracle's worldwide alliances and technologies division, will take over Held's responsibilities as senior vice president of system products.
Bloom will report directly to Oracle chief executive Larry Ellison.
Ellison has often been accused of reacting badly when his managers quit the company, but he appeared to be in generous frame of mind about Held. "I'll miss Jerry both personally and professionally," he said.
