Microsoft has released the Windows NT Load Balancing Service (WLBS) for NT 4.0 Enterprise Edition. As revealed in PC Week in September, load balancing is one of the technologies Microsoft acquired with its takeover of Valence. It is a step towards giving NT full clustering capabilities, but lacks the vital failover capability of true clustering technology. WLBS is free with NT Server Enterprise Edition licences, and existing users can upgrade without cost by downloading it from the Microsoft Web site at www.microsoft.com.
