Digital Equipment officials have denied that the company is in merger talks with Compaq. After a speech at the Comdex/Miami computer trade show, general manager of Worldwide sales Bruce Clafin is reported to have said that Digital intends to remain independent.
Rumours about a link-up between Digital and Compaq have surfaced at regular intervals over the past few years. Digital recently sold off its chip production unit to Intel and its networking division to Cabletron.
