Analysts at the Gartner Group are recommending users to delay any major buying commitments to Informix until questions about the database supplier's financial situation, sales and product strategy are answered.
"If you can hold off, hold off. If you can't, don't consider [Informix]," said Kevin Strange, an analyst at Gartner in a new report.
He added that he believed the market was consolidating at the expense of the number two and three players and predicted that IBM and Microsoft would overtake Sybase in database sales, possibly as early as this year, before beating Informix.
* Several key executives are believed to leaving Informix - Ronald Alvarez, vice president of sales in the Americas and Bruce Golden, general manager of data warehouse business development among them. Other management changes are expected and will probably be announced with the quarterly results on Monday.
