Adobe Systems and online retail giant Amazon.com have announced a global alliance in which Amazon will offer Adobe's Acrobat eBook Reader software through Amazon's e-book store.
Amazon will initially sell about 2000 titles in the US using Adobe PDF-based e-books. Among the titles are The Blue Nowhere by Ric Edelman, and The Big Red Fez by Seth Godin.
The digital selection also includes business content from the Meta Group, articles from the Harvard Business Review, travel-related material and graphical colour children's books such as Barney Is It Time Yet?.
The alliance will extend over the next 12 months to Amazon's international sites in France, Germany, Japan and the UK.
Adobe executives said electronic publishing had not yet taken off but that interest is growing.
Michael Looney, senior director of Adobe eBooks, said: "We're right at the doorstep of this whole marketplace. I don't think anybody is making tons of money from e-books right now. We're still in the infancy of the market, but everything's going great."
The company, which is the leading maker of desktop publishing software, will collect a fee for each title sold. The alliance should improve its share of the e-book market, which is projected to grow to between $2bn and $7bn over the next five years.
Adobe has a similar arrangement with Amazon rival barnesandnoble.com, which has been selling books with the technology for a few months. Amazon already has an e-book alliance with Microsoft and said the software giant will remain Amazon's primary e-book partner in the US.
Both the Microsoft and Adobe software is free and neither format requires a special device to be used.
Separately, Adobe said it has made available a free beta version of its Acrobat Reader for the Palm operating system that allows handheld devices to read and search files using PDF. A final version is expected in the second half of the year.
