Hewlett-Packard has linked up with Gemplus and Informix to introduce two new infrastructure solutions for companies that want to smart card enable their Intranets.
Officials at HP claim the solutions eliminate the need to piece together separate smart card technologies allowing companies to concentrate their energies on application development. ?They combine hardware, software, security management systems, printers, smart card readers and smart cards, all the basic building blocks that a company needs to create a secure smart card enabled Intranet,? said Feisal Mosleh Internet security director of the enterprise systems division at HP.
Designed to make electronic commerce more secure Imaginecard Web solution enables companies to issue customised smart cards to pre-registered customers, providing them with the ability to authenticate themselves for applications such as online purchasing, electronic banking and home training via the Internet.
The other solution, Imaginecard Corporate designed primarily for use within an Intranet offers digital-signature features to prevent users from denying having sent a message or a transaction order and to prevent information being altered or intercepted once it is set across the network.
Both solutions will ship with HP smartcard management systems and HP hardware consisting of an HP 9000 D-Class server running HP-UX(1) 10.20 and an HP Vectra PC running Windows 3.1, 95 or NT 4.0. The solutions also include Gemplus smart cards and smartcard readers, an Informix online dynamic server database, Datacard?s card printer and Entrust Technologies public key infrastructure.
Organisations are forging ahead with smart card enabled networks despite the fact that the systems they set up may not be fully compatible with others in the industry.
British Telecom, Cap Gemini and Gries & Heissel (German banking software supplier) are all currently piloting the HP solutions with a view to wide spread deployment. But Mosleh admitted that when it comes to linking up an Imaginecard solution with for example an IBM bespoke smartcard solution there may be compatibility issues. ?No vendor has solved the total compatibility issues that exist today,? he said.
Imaginecard Corporate is available for $120 to $200 per user, if there are more than 10,000 users and Imaginecard Web for $65 to $100.
