Lloyds TSB bank customers throughout the UK were left furious and fiverless on Tuesday evening when a computer mainframe problem caused cash machine transactions to fail.
An IT consultant who experienced the problem first hand said: "My problems started at 8pm. I was unable to withdraw cash from nine different cash machines around Reading owned by various banks using Lloyds Visa debit card."
"I phoned the Lloyds call centre from one of their telepoints and was told that there were technical problems due to mainframe failure causing total failure of the whole system," he explained.
The consultant who had to endure an eight mile walk home which lasted two hours because he was unable to get money out for a taxi said: "I find it unbelievable that there was no back up system. I think the bank should have authorised transactions in the interest of good customer relationship. People were fuming and bashing machines."
The consultant, who has been a Lloyds' customer for 17 years, said that he is now terminating his account.
"If you can't get cash out of a machine, you are in serious trouble," he said.
A spokesperson for Lloyds TSB said that the problem was "a nationwide thing."
She added: "Technical difficulties on Tuesday evening meant that cash point machines weren't available for Lloyds TSB customers for a brief period - from 8pm until 10pm."
She was unable to comment on what problems the Lloyds TSB mainframe may have experienced.
