It is available immediately, with pricing unchanged from the original version. This ranges from $718 (#449) for five users to $32,625 for 250. Upgrades are free to users buying the product before 3 October.
Future releases of Group-Wise will concentrate on document management features, revealed GroupWise product manager Peter Joseph. The cornerstone of this plan is the Jefferson Project - Novell's much-vaunted document management system. This will ship not now be available before December, however, a year after it was originally slated for release. It will go into open beta by the end of this month.
The next version of Group-Wise, codenamed Surge, will later next year.
It will include full information management, according to Joseph. "We are enhancing our presence in document management in groupware," he explained.
"We intend to lead that field."
GroupWise 5.2 includes support for standards including IMAP4, dial-up SMTP/MIME, and POP3 and the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) on the client and server software. The suite also has a fully functional Java client. A Java-based console also allows network managers to view their whole GroupWise system from a single point of access - not previously possible.
An imaging solution to go with the package is to be released with version 5.2, incorporating OCR software from Xerox so users can scan in paper documents to Novell's document management system.
