Novell has ended months of speculation over its leadership succession by appointing Sun's chief technology officer, Eric Schmidt, as chairman and chief executive.
As CTO at Sun, Schmidt gained a reputation as a pioneer of Internet technologies, notably the Java language.
Novell chairman John Young now becomes vice chairman and Joe Marengi remains as president and chief operating officer.
