Computer Associates has unveiled a web services management tool available as a product and hosted service, and new wireless network security and management software.
Integrating features from CA's Unicenter and eTrust technologies, Web Services Distributed Management (WSDM) 3.1 is designed to manage service-oriented architecture environments. It can also be used to manage free-form XML, Corba, EDI and other technologies.
Using the software, customers can register their web services online to be monitored and managed by WSDM, which reports events and performance results back to users.
"The ability of organisations to successfully implement on-demand computing is largely contingent upon their ability to effectively manage and secure service-oriented architectures," said Yogesh Gupta, chief technology officer at CA.
The company believes that its portfolio of security, storage and service management software is a necessary part of implementing on-demand computing.
"On-demand is all about simplification, and simplification is all about management," Gupta told delegates in his technology keynote address at CA World 2004.
CA is adding management database technologies to its portfolio, designed to allow firms to track their IT assets.
The idea is for IT departments to be able to offer service-level agreements and attribute costs to each department within an organisation according to usage and value.
Separately, CA announced that a beta of its Wireless Site Management (WSM) software would be available from today.
Designed to reduce the labour costs of manual configuration, and crack down on rogue access points, it offers automatic wireless local area network discovery (and disables unauthorised access points), automatic encryption key management, location- and time-based access control, connection load balance and built-in reporting features.
Gupta said that WSM would help customers "tame the wireless environment" and "minimise the cost of operating the network".
