Sun chief operating officer, Ed Zander, has been promoted to president of the company.
Zander, who has worked for Sun since 1987, has held a number of positions including president of Sun's computers systems business, vice president of marketing and software division president.
In January last year, he was made chief operating officer, responsible for Sun's seven product divisions.
Company chief operating officer Scott McNealy commented: "Ed has done a tremendous job of managing the daily operations of the company over the past year, and I feel the time is right to acknowledge his important contribution. Ed has been a key leader for Sun and deserves the recognition for driving the operations of the company to this point."
