IBM's Tivoli division is extending its product focus beyond systems management into areas such as security and storage management.
Speaking at the Planet Tivoli user conference in Madrid today, chief executive Jan Lindelow said Tivoli is reinventing itself to take into account the explosion in bandwidth demand and increased number pervasive devices, such as Wap phones, that businesses have to manage.
"We're broadening our product strategy so that we are taking more than one single product suite to market," said Lindelow. Tivoli has also simplified its pricing model to charge based on the number of devices managed, rather than per user.
According to Tivoli, as companies extend their business outside the firewall through ecommerce and extranets they need software to manage the security, management control and availability of their environments.
"Just when we were getting the problem of managing distributed systems under control, new technologies came in changing the rules," said Lindelow. "Budgets are spiralling out of control, there is a reduced time to deliver, and IT departments are dealing with a skills shortage."
James Governor, an analyst at Illuminata, said the move into areas such as security will help Tivoli to better compete with rival Computer Associates (CA). "CA has a wider breadth of product and has been more effective in the mid-market," he said. "Moving away from having one core product, Tivoli Enterprise, towards also providing, for example, security tools will help Tivoli be more effective."
Bob Yellin, senior vice president at Tivoli, said the company is positioning itself to deal with the challenges of managing an extended enterprise by developing its helpdesk, storage and security management portfolios. Among its goals is to allow the management of a single pool of storage with one file system, based on Tivoli's recently announced Sanergy product.
Part of the changes in Tivoli stem from a closer tie-in with parent company IBM, through which Tivoli is trying to bolster its indifferent reputation for customer support and product quality.
"You will see a much more solid controlled environment coming out of Tivoli through a change in our engineering practices and testing methods," said Yellin.
