The market for e-book readers is growing and, while sales have largely been restricted to the US, this is likely to change over the next two years, according to the latest report from ABI Research.
The analyst firm predicted that around 15 million e-book readers will ship globally in 2012, rising to 30 million in 2013 driven by a surge in digital content.
"Digitised content is the key. It has been in the US that the most content has been translated to digital form. The companies that provide the devices also maintain tightly integrated content stores that make access easy," said principal ABI Research analyst Jeff Orr in the eReader Evolution report.
"In two or three years we will enter a period in which much more digital printed matter will become available in other countries and regions. Western Europe will be first, followed by eastern Europe and Asia, especially China."
Orr added that e-book readers differ only slightly in form and design, and that it is content that will drive sales.
"The device brand is not as important as the content. Success will increasingly depend on the strength of the relationship between reader and content provider," he said.
"Non-US markets will be less driven by booksellers, and more by publishers and perhaps even network operators."
