Masked raiders attacked staff at the London offices of Express Newspapers before breaking through three doors into a computer room and making off with thousands of pounds' worth of IT kit.
The gang of approximately 10 thieves, who struck this Sunday, wore balaclavas to conceal their identities when they ambushed terrified security guards.
According to sources, the attackers did not display or threaten to use weapons, but caused considerable damage to the company's computers.
A Scotland Yard police officer said: "A large group of youths had forced entry into the building and damaged computer equipment. Staff at the building were outnumbered and unable to stop them. Our enquiries are continuing."
An employee of Express Newspapers said the raiders were well organised: "They obviously knew what they were after. It was very well planned and over in a matter of minutes."
